Even if these ice crystals form a large cloud layer, they can be detected by the onboard weather radar. Satellite radar has lower detection accuracy than onboard weather radar. Ice formation can be detected by the onboard weather radar when it occurs in the core area of strong convection, while satellite radar detects small ice crystals outside the core area.
